With residency season in full swing, I am taking a moment to give you my simple tips for interview day attire. My advice for putting together an interview outfit:
- Dress the part. It’s better to overdress than underdress. Wear a business suit. My favorite one is a black business suit from Theory (more information here)
- Bring your personality into a rather plain black business suit with your shirt/blouse, tie and/or accessories. I often wear a blush pink blouse, red ballet flats and simple jewelry. Why not accent your outfit with your favorite color via your tie or dress shirt? For men, I recommend sold colors for your dress shirt.
- Comfort and walkability. If you suspect there will be a lot of walking during the interview (i.e. tour of the facilities, hospital, school, etc.) consider flats instead of heels. If you wear heels, consider this Friction Block Stick that has gotten me through many days in heels. Also, I posted on “How to Wear Ballet Flats” & “How to Wear Heels Comfortably all-day Long“
- Wear a family piece. I almost always wear one of my family’s necklaces to show off my heritage and know my family is behind me during any challenge – either a Chinese Jade and gold necklace from my grandparents or more recently a Pearl necklace from my aunt. My sapphire and diamond ring is also from my parents and I wear it on a daily basis.
